It is International Women's Day, and I find myself reflecting on the countless stories I've had the privilege to capture through my lens. As a photographer, I've had the opportunity to witness the struggles and triumphs of women from diverse backgrounds. Each click of my camera serves as a testament to their strength, resilience, and unwavering pursuit of equality.
It is confounding that in this modern-day world, women continue to fight for equality and against discrimination, violence, and poverty, as they have since the 1800s and earlier. Despite centuries of progress, systemic barriers persist, hindering women's full participation in society. From the suffragettes of the 19th century to the #MeToo movement of today, women have been at the forefront of social change, demanding their rights and challenging the status quo.
International Women's Day serves as a reminder of both the progress made and the obstacles that still lie ahead on the path to gender equality. As a photographer, I see it as my duty to capture not only the victories but also the struggles that women continue to endure. Whether it's the fight for bodily autonomy, the battle against gender-based violence, or the demand for equal representation, these stories must be told.
Furthermore, photography holds the unique ability to inspire action and drive change. By portraying moments of resilience, determination, and courage, my intention is to evoke emotions and support the empowerment that women rightfully deserve.
"Whenever I cover a women's event or protest, I am struck by the number of men standing beside their wives, daughters, or female friends." - Clee
As we commemorate International Women's Day, let us celebrate the achievements of women past and present, while also acknowledging the work that remains to be done. Let us honor the activists, the trailblazers, and the unsung heroes who have paved the way for progress. And let us recommit ourselves to the ongoing struggle for justice, equality, and human rights.
In the words of Audre Lorde, "I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own." On this International Women's Day, may we stand in solidarity with women everywhere, united in our quest for a world where all are free to live, love, and thrive.
I had the incredible opportunity to experience the historic Women’s March on Washington, where hundreds of thousands of passionate individuals flooded the streets, joined by millions around the world. This event made a powerful and impactful statement in support of women everywhere. The photos in this story from the March on Washington are a tribute and a celebration of every march that takes place around the world.
